Even Leafs fans could feel the Calgary Flames’ latest loss, as it included an early departure from Chris Tanev.
Yes, the same Tanev brother the Leafs hope to acquire if the Flames opt to swap out its UFAs after Christmas.
Obviously he’d have to be healthy if a deal is to be made.
At this point that’s very much in question, as the 33-year-old defenceman left Monday’s 6-5 loss in Colorado after a mere 15 seconds, following a Ross Colton hit that sent Tanev face-first into the glass.
He got to his feet by himself and appeared dazed as he skated slowly to the bench, hunched over and in obvious discomfort as trainers walked him immediately down the tunnel to the dressing room.

The hit drew the ire of teammate Noah Hanifin, but it went unpenalized, as it was an awkward collision that caught Tanev from the side and sent him into the glass off balance and unable to brace himself.
With the Flames using the next month or so to gauge their course of action with regards to its three prized UFAs, an injury to Tanev, Elias Lindholm or Hanifin is one of the risks the Flames take on.
Especially when it comes to the rugged Tanev, whose selfless approach is exactly what every contender in the league would love to add by the deadline.
The Flames played with five defencemen the rest of the night and offered up no updates on Tanev’s status.
PAINFUL LOSS
Aside from Tanev’s injury, the only thing that stung more for the Flames than their 30 shot blocks was leaving Denver without a point.
It was, quite simply, Calgary’s grittiest effort of the season.
Playing in one of the toughest NHL buildings against a juggernaut to kick off three hellish road tests in four nights, the Flames entered the third period with a two-goal lead that appeared to have them destined for a season-turning upset.
Instead, it ended with a stomach-turning collapse.
Three goals in the third period by the Avalanche erased an effort that produced endless bumps and bruises that will serve as a reminder of what could have been.
Three of the Flames’ five remaining defencemen played more than 25 minutes apiece, while putting on a shot blocking clinic that saw the exhausted group step in front of 18 shots.
On one shift both MacKenzie Weegar and Ilya Solovyov came up limping, as the hits just kept on coming.
No one was safe from puck punishment, as Rasmus Andersson even absorbed a painful shot while sitting on the bench.
They did it all to help Dan Vladar for an effort that seemed destined to be his second game-stealing performance in his last three outings.
And then came the third period, when an evening of defensive lapses proved deadly, especially when Nathan MacKinnon of all people was allowed to walk in for the winner on a breakaway he easily finished with 4:30 remaining.

“For sure it sucks – it was looking pretty good for a while,” said Nazem Kadri following the loss against the team with which he won a Cup.

The Flames overcame an early second period deficit to score four times before the second intermission.
Alas, the Avalanche lived up to their names after a goalie change helped them shut the door and put on more pressure than the Flames could handle.
“It’s tough,” said coach Ryan Huska afterwards, whose club faces Vegas on Tuesday night, less than 21 hours after the Flames’ gutting defeat.
“We had a tough stretch in the third period there where we made a mistake with the puck and they got a lot of momentum.
“It’s not ideal losing a defenceman early like that, but the hard part in the game is you score five goals but you can’t give up six.
“There are mistakes we have to correct in our own zone.”
We’ll see how the Flames rebound from coming oh-so-close in such an emotional, physical outing they probably deserved at least a point from.

Kadri’s first goal against his former team opened the scoring in the first, setting a tone for an evening in which he was fully engaged all night long.
