Cyberattack Disrupts Refrigeration Systems in Belgian Supermarkets
On Monday morning, Belgian news sources reported significant temperature increases in supermarket refrigeration units, resulting in the disposal of large quantities of perishable food.
Delhaize and Colruyt Chains Affected
Delhaize, one of Belgium’s major supermarket chains, notified its store managers early on about malfunctioning refrigeration systems. Reports from the Belgian broadcaster RTBF indicated that these issues are suspected to stem from a cyberattack similar to recent incidents in France. Additionally, Dutch media outlets confirmed that Delhaize locations in Luxembourg were also impacted.
A spokesperson for Delhaize acknowledged an “IT incident affecting the refrigeration systems” across a number of its stores.
Meanwhile, Colruyt, which operates Spar stores, reported that refrigeration problems have occurred in approximately five of its locations, emphasizing that they are actively working to resolve the technical difficulties. Notably, no Colruyt stores themselves have been reported damaged, although around fifteen Carrefour stores in Belgium are also facing similar issues.
Cybersecurity Concerns Raised
The Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium indicated that they are closely monitoring the ongoing situation and assessing the potential ramifications.
International Impact in Sweden
In addition to Belgium, supermarkets in Sweden have also been affected. A spokesperson for ICA confirmed that an isolated incident impacted refrigeration systems in several stores outside of its central network. Reports from Swedish news media further revealed that Coop stores have also encountered similar refrigeration problems.
Previous Attacks Highlight Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities
This series of incidents follows a wave of cyberattacks experienced by French supermarkets in mid-October, whereby attackers compromised refrigeration units produced by Danfoss, a leading manufacturer. These attacks prompted a response from French authorities, including the Prime Minister and the national cybersecurity agency.
As of now, Danfoss has yet to provide any comments regarding the recent events.
