Fresh from CAF Women’s Champions League glory, grateful Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies keeper Andile Dlamini speaks about mental health struggles.
The Masandawana Ladies’ net minder was sidelined by Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup this year.

While many questioned Ellis’ choice after selecting Kaylin Swart, it emerged that Dlamini was suffering from mental health while there were talks that she was unfit.
Following their continental glory as they beat Morocco’s Sporting Casablanca 3-0 in Cote d’Ivoire, Dlamini also scooped the Goalkeeper of the Tournament Award as she kept clean sheets in the entire tournament.

Despite her outstanding displays for Sundowns, Ellis overlooked Dlamini but the keeper used that as motivation when she kept clean sheets in COSAFA Championships and Champions League.
While Ellis and Swart came underfire from the footballing family, Dlamini is now grateful to the Chloorkop-based side.
“I am thankful to the support team, technical staff, and my teammates for always being there for me,” Dlamini says per IOL.
“Mental health is very important and I believe at the club they look after you.

“I am well taken care of (at the club). I am always happy wherever I am. If you don’t believe that, go check every video of where I am – whether it’s at Banyana or Sundowns.”

In addition, the bubbly glove woman adds that it was an emotional moment to see her mother sob tears of joy, given that she’s always with her in spirit when she’s solely tasked with safeguarding Sundowns and Banyana’s goals.
“Sundowns is my family and my safe space,” adds Dlamini.
“Obviously, I like winning, and that’s what I want to see (above) everything. My mom plays with me on the field, and that’s one of the reasons she’s emotional about this victory.

“I am a strong individual and a team player more than anything.
“I believe that everything happens for a reason. God puts in you in places where he wants you to understand who He is.”
