A 25-year-old man’s body was dragged by a speeding car for almost 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) on the Yamuna Expressway in India before stopping near a Mathura toll block Tuesday morning.
The occupants of the car, a man and a woman, were taken into custody in connection with the case, the New Indian Express reported.
Unnamed police sources claimed that the driver of the car was headed to Noida from Agra, according to the outlet.
When the driver stopped the car at Mant toll plaza near milestone number 94, the face of the body being dragged immediately caught the attention of security personnel at a toll booth. The rest of the body, which was stuck on the left side rear wheel, had turned into a mass of flesh.
Police recovered the badly mangled body parts and sent them for postmortem.
The victim was identified as 25-year-old Rijpal Singh, a resident of Urenga village, The Times of India reported, citing superintendent of police Trigun Bisen.
“[Singh] used to work as a driver with a private courier company in Delhi and met with an accident while returning to his native place during the wee hours on Tuesday,” the police official said.
Bisen added, “The accused, Virendra Singh, who was driving a car with a Delhi registration number, is being interrogated. CCTV cameras on the expressway are also being examined.”
During questioning, Virendra, the driver of the Swift Dezire car involved in the case, said that “due to dense fog, visibility on the expressway was low, hence, the man who had met with an accident got stuck with the car.”
After a preliminary investigation, police found blood stains near milestone 106 of the expressway, which is around 11 kilometers away from the toll plaza where the car was seen.
Police also recovered the shoe of the victim at milestone number 106.
“The accident is likely to have occurred near milestone 106,” Mant station house officer Pradeep Kumar Yadav was quoted as saying by Times of India.
“We are trying to ascertain whether the victim was hit by the car in question or some other vehicle as the front part of the car did not have any signs of damage on it. On the basis of the complaint received from the victim’s family, an FIR will be registered,” the officer added.
In early January, a Delhi woman was killed after being dragged around 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) by a car from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala after the scooter she was riding collided with the vehicle, India Today reported.
The naked body of the 23-year-old woman, who was on her way home, was found lying on the road. Both a crime team and a forensics team were called in for investigation. Meanwhile, the body was sent to a hospital.
Delhi Police located the car and began an investigation. They also traced the owner of the car and arrested five people.
