Earlier this year, Google announced that it’s going to bring E2E encryption to groups in Google Messages. Now, according to 9To5Google, the company is starting to roll this out, as some users are starting to see this functionality.
E2E encryption is extremely important nowadays. Nobody wants to have their private conversations listened to. This is why it’s important for messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and others to encrypt their conversations. This means that outside sources will not be able to see the contents of the conversations.
Google has spent E2E encryption for Google Messages, but that was not the case as it came to group conversations. Group conversations were at risk of being peered into by third parties.
However, E2E encryption is coming to groups for Google Messages
Google recently launched a handful of updates to Google Messages. And we were all wondering if they included the E2E encryption for groups. According to several users, this update has come.
If you go to your settings and check out the Group Details, you’ll see a bit of a change to the menu. Right under the group name option, you’ll see a section titled “E2E Encryption.” Under that, it will show you the status: whether it’s on or off. In the screenshot, we see large red text showing that the encryption is off.
Under that, it will show you how many people the encryption is enabled for. That’s followed by a “learn more” link.
This feature is rolling out
Since this is still rolling out, you may not see it just yet. If you don’t see this feature, search for Google Messages on the Play Store. From there, look to see if there is an update button on the page. If so, update the app and relaunch it. If you don’t see the update button, then you may just want to wait a couple of days.
