Berlin (dpa) – The German government wants to attract more nurses from countries with strong workforce potential. To this end, Federal Employment Minister Hubertus Heil and Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will travel to Brazil in June to conclude the necessary agreement. Heil said there were very high numbers of nurses in the largest country in South America. Germany has already reached agreements with Mexico and Indonesia on recruiting nurses. In February Heil travelled to Ghana with Development Minister Svenja Schulze where the recruitment of nurses was on the agenda. In an interview, Heil said that Germany would ‘work with businesses to implement a recruitment strategy in countries where there are more well educated young people than the local employment market can accommodate.’ He also stressed that ‘we will go about this very sensitively so as not to take workers away from any country which needs them itself.’
Federal Governments in Germany have been trying to recruit nurses from abroad for several years. The Government hopes that the Skilled Workers Immigration Act will attract more people to Germany. A points system will make it easier for professionals who gained their qualifications abroad to emigrate to Germany.
