Hilarious Reactions as William Ruto Treats Mombasa Leaders to Sumptuous Lunch: “Wapi Mama Mboga”

• After the new year celebrations, President Willian Ruto united with the faithful of the Siloam Ministry in Bamburi, Mombasa, for the Sunday service
• Later in the afternoon, he was accompanied by the local leaders to the popular Qaffe Point restaurant where he had lunch
• Their photos from the Mombasa restaurant ignited a debate, a section of Kenyans questioning why a commoner or ‘hustler’ did not accompany the president

Kenyans have weighed in on the luncheon date to which President William Ruto treated a section of Mombasa leaders on Sunday, January 1, at a popular restaurant.

The president, together with his spouse, Rachel Ruto, had camped in the coastal city for the new year celebrations.

In the afternoon, in the company of the local leaders, the president had lunch at the acclaimed Qaffe Point from where photos were shared.

‘Mama mboga’ no-show in Ruto’s luncheon

They had earlier on united with the faithful of the Siloam Ministry in Bamburi, Mombasa, for the Sunday church service.

In the company of Ruto and Rachel were Nyali MP Mohamed Ali, EALA’s Hassan Omar, Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif, and Kilifi North MP Owen Baya, among others.

Having based his presidential campaign on the affairs of the common citizenry, some quarters believed he would include the commoners in his undertakings.

Ruto’s mantra would be like “tunataka kuunda serikali ya mama mboga, ya mtu wa boda boda (we want to form a government owned by the vegetable seller – connoting a common citizen).

However, in the photos from the restaurant, no commoner was spotted having a good time with Ruto who had, in the pre-election campaigns, presented himself as their common person’s ‘Messiah’.

“Lunch with mama mboga. Sorry mama mboga supplied mboga,” lawyer Wahome Thuku made a jest out of the photos.

Thuku suggested that the haves are the only ones who get to hobnob with the president, as the have-nots have a glimpse from a distance.

Ruto addresses electricity inflated tariff claims

In the meantime, the president dismissed claims that Kenyans would pay more for electricity after the subsidy programme launched by former president Uhuru Kenyatta was removed.

During the service at Siloam Ministry, Bamburi, Mombasa county, Ruto reassured Kenyans that the cost of electricity will not go up.

“I want to assure the country that there will be no additional charges today or going into the future on electricity bills to the people of Kenya,” said Ruto.

The head of state said there would be a review in tariffs to ensure Kenyans and manufacturers are catered for in the future.

“We have already taken care of all the subsidies that we removed in August and we are going to make sure that our manufacturers, our value addition and processors and all Kenyans including those on flying tariff are taken into consideration as we review the tariffs going into the future,” he added.

The president further dismissed reports that there will be job losses occasioned by the move to drop the electricity subsidy programme.

“Contrary to the stories being peddled around that there will be job losses, there will be an additional cost of living…those are just people who are speculators,” he said.
