Illawarra Coach Critiques Referee Following Heavy Loss
Illawarra Hawks head coach Justin Tatum has publicly criticized NBL referee Chris Reid, alleging that Reid consistently disrupts the team’s momentum during crucial matches. This commentary came after the Hawks faced a disappointing defeat against the Adelaide 36ers, losing 106-78 in a match marked by tensions and a significant fourth-quarter altercation.
Match Highlights and Controversy
As Illawarra aimed for their third consecutive victory, the game quickly escalated into chaos when Hawks center Makur Maker was ejected in the final period. The melee began with 3:51 remaining when Adelaide import Nick Rakocevic shoved Maker, prompting an aggressive response from Illawarra’s Will Hickey.
The ensuing clash spilled onto the Hawks’ bench, with Rakocevic receiving only a technical foul for initiating the altercation, while Hickey was charged with a flagrant foul. Maker faced the severity of two fouls, receiving both a technical and a flagrant, which ultimately led to his ejection.
Coach Tatum Expresses Discontent
Tatum expressed his displeasure after being informed of the referees’ decisions. “Whenever we start gaining momentum, it seems like the league assigns us Chris Reid,” he remarked. “We’ve tried to limit his involvement as much as possible, but we must still compete under these circumstances.”
Regarding Maker’s dismissal, Tatum stated, “It was unfortunate. ‘MK’ shouldn’t have been ejected. If he was penalized, then Rakocevic should have faced the same consequences.” He pointed out the disparities in the disciplinary actions, noting that while Maker received two penalties, Rakocevic was instead awarded four consecutive free throws, along with possession of the ball.
Querying the Refereeing Decisions
Perspective from Adelaide’s Coach
Adelaide’s coach, Trevor Gleeson, commented on the incident, admitting uncertainty regarding its origin. “I didn’t see how it all began. There seemed to be some pushing, and then a third player (Hickey) escalated things,” he noted. Gleeson was relieved that none of his players joined the fray on the court, acknowledging the swift change from a minor exchange to an intense confrontation.
