This holiday spot is a British Overseas Territory, which means it is under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom but is not technically a part of it. It is only 7 square kilometers, but it has a lot squeezed into a tiny space.

Located on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, along the Mediterranean Sea and bordered by Spain to the north, it is in a prime location for good views and great weather.

Gibraltar also has a famous landmark, a massive limestone rock that is home to the Barbary Macaques, the only wild monkey population in Europe.

This landmark dominates the views in Gibraltar and can’t be missed.

It is a popular tourist destination, especially for a day trip from Spain. It is well known for its stunning scenic views and historic sites.

If you are considering visiting Gibraltar, you are probably wondering what are some things to know before going and also wondering if is Gibraltar worth visiting.

Here are a few things to know before visiting this beautiful place.

Reasons To Visit Gibraltar: The Pros

Although it is relatively small, Gibraltar has many pros going for it when it comes to visiting this region.

Natural Beauty

One of the main reasons Gibraltar is popular is the stunning natural beauty it has which is unlike anything else nearby.

Gibraltar is home to the famous landmark the Rock Of Gibraltar, which is a massive limestone rock that has risen out of the sea and is linked to mainland Spain.

Gibraltar is very unique in that you can see Spain and Morocco, or Europe and Africa from here which is pretty impressive.

This territory offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Mediterranean Sea and the African coast.

The Upper Rock Nature Reserve is a great place to really appreciate the natural beauty of Gibraltar.  To explore, you can get here by cable car here to enjoy incredible views.

For a small place, there is an incredible amount of natural beauty to enjoy. Including numerous amounts of caves

Wildlife Watching

Another huge draw to Gibraltar is the fact that this is truly a perfect spot for people interested in wildlife watching.

It is also home to the only wild monkey population in Europe, the Barbary Macaque, which is a unique attraction for animal lovers.

Gibraltar is a popular spot for bird watchers too. From the top of the Upper Rock nature reserve, you can see thousands of birds migrating from Africa to Europe in a truly unique spectacle.

The surrounding Mediterranean Sea also offers opportunities for dolphin and whale watching. You can head out for a couple of hours and see the many dolphins that call these waters home.

Rich History And Culture

The rich history and culture of the area are another huge draw for tourists to Gibraltar each year.

This territory has a fascinating history as it has been inhabited by several different civilizations throughout the years, giving it a really diverse culture and architecture.

Some of the unique historic sights in the area include Moorish Castle and the Great Siege Tunnels. Perched high above the old town of Gibraltar, the medieval Moorish Castle is certainly a unique sight.

This castle was originally built in the eighth century and has been rebuilt throughout history, although a lot of the castle has turned to ruin, there are still parts that stand today.

Here you can see the Tower of Homage and several scars from the many sieges Gibraltar has been through.

The most remarkable sign of the military presence in this area has to be the Great Siege Tunnels of Gibraltar. These impressive tunnels were created by manual labor carved out of the sheer face of the Rock.

These tunnels were built by the British army as a means of defense against France and Spain. They were completed in just six weeks.

Outdoor Activities

Gibraltar offers a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, rock climbing, and water sports, such as kayaking, diving, and fishing.

A popular activity is the Mediterranean Steps. If you are fit and active, you can reach the highest point in Gibraltar via the Mediterranean Steps. This is a difficult walk and not for the faint-hearted or those afraid of heights.

But the payoff is exceptional and it’s definitely worth it once you get to the top. This walk consists of a steep staircase built by the British army in the 18th century. This is an hour-long hike, including some stops.

You can also explore some of the other trails along the way to the top if you wish.

The skywalk suspension bridge and the botanical gardens are also must-do outdoor activities in Gibraltar.

Shopping And Dining

Gibraltar is a really popular shopping destination, because of the range of duty-free products available here. Many people go shopping for luxury items, tobacco, and alcohol here.

You will also find some incredible restaurants here.

Gibraltar is a popular shopping destination, offering a range of duty-free products, including alcohol, tobacco, and luxury goods.

The territory is also home to a range of restaurants, offering a mix of local and international cuisine.

Beaches

Another great reason to visit Gibraltar is the fact that it has some stunning beaches. Gibraltar has the same gorgeous weather as the south of Spain and is a perfect place to spend some time at the beach.

Some of the best beaches include Catalan Bay, which is a fishing village to the east of the Rock of Gibraltar. This is a fishing village and only fishermen and their families have been allowed to live there for generations.

Therefore it has retained its character.

Today, most of the village residents are still the descendants of the original Genoese fishermen who worked on these waters for centuries.

Catalan Bay is a relaxing and perfect spot for people looking to slow down.

Easily Accessible

A huge positive that Gibraltar has going for it, is the fact that it is so easily accessed from Spain and from Morocco.

You can easily fly here from the UK and several other European destinations, or you can travel by a short ferry from Morocco to Gibraltar.

It is also possible to enter the territory by land from Spain, which is a popular option for visitors coming from nearby cities like Marbella and Seville.

Reasons To Visit Gibraltar: The Cons

Although the pros may seem to outweigh the cons, there are a couple of things to know when traveling to Gibraltar, as these particular cons may influence your travel plans.

Small Size

If you are considering a trip here, It is important to keep in mind that Gibraltar is a very small territory, with an area of only 7 square kilometers.

While this can make it easier to explore and navigate, it also means that you will run out of things to do and see pretty quickly.

You can see pretty much everything here within a day or two, depending on how quickly you go from attraction to attraction.

However, if you want to relax, and enjoy the beaches and the hikes available, it will take longer.

Crowded At Peak Times

Since Gibraltar can be accessed easily and is a popular tourist destination, it can get quite crowded during peak times, especially during the summer and at weekends.

You will have crowds of tourists coming from Spain, and Morocco, and flying in from all over Europe during these times.

This can make it difficult to get around and can lead to longer wait times at popular attractions.

The Final Verdict: So Is Gibraltar Worth Visiting?

So is Gibraltar nice, and is Gibraltar worth visiting? Absolutely!

Gibraltar is not on many travelers’ radars. However, it definitely should be. It is a city filled with wildlife, history, and culture and surrounded by natural beauty.

Doesn’t that sound just perfect?

Gibraltar is a popular day trip for anyone visiting Malaga.

Yes, it is a small city, and many people may argue that there isn’t anything to see, but we would disagree.
