Brussels (dpa) – The European Union intends to provide lasting support to Ukraine and exert more pressure on Russia. This was agreed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the other heads of state and government at an EU summit in Brussels. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin never expected the West to show such united support for Ukraine, stressed Scholz. “We are also ready to support Ukraine for as long as it takes.”
The summit declaration on Ukraine states that the European Union is committed to increasing collective pressure on Russia, explaining that this includes possible further sanctions and working on the existing price cap for Russian oil products. The EU states pledged political, economic, military, financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine – for as long as it takes.
