Grammy-winning musician Lizzo recently made headlines for her bold move at a concert in Tennessee, where she invited several drag performers to join her on stage.
Lizzo is taking a stand against a recently passed Tennessee law that restricts the appearance of Drag Queen performers in public places. Lizzo’s decision has sparked both praise and backlash.
The law, signed in March by Republican Governor Bill Lee, prohibits “adult cabaret entertainment” on public property or anywhere children can view it. The bill includes performers such as strippers, go-go dancers, and male or female impersonators. Although their performance technically violated the law, a federal judge temporarily blocked its implementation just hours before they were set to perform to take effect, citing First Amendment issues.
Creating a “Safe Space”
“In light of recent and tragic events and current events, I was told by people on the internet, ‘Cancel your shows in Tennessee,’ ‘Don’t go to Tennessee,’” Lizzo shared with her audience. “Their reason was valid, but why would I not come to the people who need to hear this message the most? The people who need to feel this release the most?”
Lizzo explained that she was creating a “safe space” for drag entertainers and the LGBTQ+ community. “Why would I not create a safe space in Tennessee where we can celebrate drag entertainers and celebrate our differences?”
Fighting Against Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislation
Despite facing legal challenges, Tennessee is just one of many states looking to pass similar legislation. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, 469 anti-LGTBQIA+ bills have been introduced in the United States.
Lizzo’s public stance against the drag ban sends a message of support to the LGBTQ+ community, and her decision to invite drag performers on stage amplifies their voices and experiences. As Lizzo said, “What people in Tennessee are doing is giving hope, so thank you so much for standing up for your rights, protecting each other, and holding the people accountable who should be protecting us.”
