Wealthy London Residents Prepare for Uncertainty with Underground Shelters
In a notable trend among London’s ultra-high net worth individuals, many have taken proactive measures for disaster preparedness, particularly in the realm of underground shelters. Trevor Abrahmsohn, a luxury real estate agent from Glentree Estates, highlights the growing interest in these fortified living spaces. “I had one eccentric client who had a nuclear shelter built under any property he bought, fully equipped with food, water, filtered air and so on,” he reveals.
This trend not only involves the addition of shelters but encompasses the design of lavish subterranean amenities. Many opulent mansions and super-mansions feature extensive basements and sub-basements that can extend 30 to 40 feet below ground. While these spaces are often showcased as cinemas, gyms, or even ballroom venues, their structural depth offers enhanced safety against potential catastrophic events, including a nuclear attack.
As geopolitical tensions rise and concerns about safety grow, the demand for such safe havens appears set to increase among London’s wealthy elite. The dual purpose of luxury and security is redefining how these properties are perceived and valued in the high-end real estate market.
