Identifying the Issue
While numerous owners of the iPhone Duo report a seamless experience with their devices, some users have complained about alarming horizontal and vertical lines appearing on the inner screen. Visual evidence shared on Reddit and various social media platforms depicts a thin vertical line positioned centrally, accompanied by a broader horizontal line on the right side of the inner display.
Prevalence of the Issue
The extent of this screen anomaly remains uncertain; however, online reports indicate a significant number of affected users, including incidents involving Apple Store demo units. Many users suggest that the issue arises simply upon unlocking their devices. One Reddit user noted that their phone had only been in use for about six hours and had been opened fewer than 20 times before the problem manifested.
Interestingly, this issue has not been reported in any review units distributed by Apple prior to the official launch, suggesting that it may stem from a manufacturing defect affecting a particular production batch.

Potential Causes Behind the Malfunction
Though the exact cause of the issue remains ambiguous, it seems to be associated with the device’s hinge mechanism. iFixit, through their teardown analysis, constructed a precise 3D model of the hinge for comparative purposes. Their findings indicated:
“The breaks cluster near the transition from the gap for the crossing flex cable to the central hinge support. The observed damage in the photos is not occurring at the point where the display cable passes through the hinge, but slightly lower, at a juncture where several edges converge and alter the support for the delicate display as it flexes.”
“The concentration of edge formations in this region suggests multiple potential failure points. The central pivot seems distinct from the remainder of the hinge. Is it becoming stuck? Could another component be causing obstructions?”
What is certain is that these issues consistently lead to similar display problems, implying that the source might relate to elements situated beneath the screen.
Apple’s Response to the Issue
In an official statement, Apple confirmed awareness of a display issue affecting a limited number of iPhone Duo units. The company encourages users experiencing display problems to reach out to AppleCare at 1-800-APLCARE for potential replacements. Furthermore, Apple has circulated a memo to its retail locations and authorized service providers detailing the issue and offering diagnostic procedures for technicians.
