Orlando Pirates to miss out on long-term Bafana Bafana international target 

Orlando Pirates are reportedly set to miss out on one of their prime goalkeeping targets in Veli Mothwa, according to the latest reports.

Pirates could be set to lose up to two of their senior first team goalkeepers at the end of the current campaign, with Mothwa a known previous target.

Mothwa has been a mainstay for AmaZulu since joining the Durban-based side from Chippa United, a few seasons back. The player was also instrumental in the run the team had to CAF Champions League qualification under then coach Benni McCarthy too. Those impressive and consistent performances went on to catch the eye of the Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who has selected him in all of his national team squads to date.

Broos is not the only one that Mothwa’s displays convinced, with Soweto giants Pirates also being constantly linked heavily to his services. In fact, at some point it looked liked the Buccaneers would have to make a tough choice between Bafana Bafana number one, Ronwen Williams and the number two, in the Usuthu star. In the end, the Sea Robbers walked away with the signature of neither, opting for Ghana international Richard Ofori instead.

Mothwa no longer an option for Pirates?

Now with Ofori thought to have rejected an initial contract extension offer from Pirates, the club are believed to have resumed their search for a goalkeeper. If they thought Mothwa would be an option, however, apparently that ship may have just sailed. According to Soccer-Laduma, the player’s agent has confirmed they concluded a new long-term contract for his services with AmaZulu.

“ Yes, his (Mothwa) previous contract would have been coming to an end but we did our business a lot earlier than most people would’ve anticipated, however, if you want more information you would have to speak to AmaZulu president (Sandile Zungu).” The players agent Basia Michaels of QT Sports.

Pirates and AmaZulu have done some good business with each other of late, it will now remain to be seen if Mothwa will be part of that.
