Readers sound off on hair loss, changed clocks and marijuana enforcement – New York Daily News

Manhattan: I feel sorry for every bald man on Earth. They did nothing wrong to lose their hair, which can destroy a person’s self-esteem. But nothing could look worse than the Mr. Clean shaved head, and I wish they’d retire this horrible trend (only a few men can pull it off, like Yul Brynner).

Yes, I get that you don’t want to look like a banker or politician, but look at Bernie Sanders’s fantastic hair. He makes the comb over look great! Plus the Mr. Clean look makes no sense from any angle. The Edge of U2 always wears a comfy skull cap, which not only looks infinitely better, but it means he doesn’t have to shave his head every day or even every week! Two-hundred years ago they wore powdered wigs, which is also better than the painful Mr. Clean look! You have to shave your head every day — to look your worst?

If I were a bald man, I’d maybe go so far as to tattoo “hair” onto my head for less hassle. They spend millions to put tattoos in less logical body locations! Or I’d wear wigs like Elton John, which looks a lot better than a shaved head does.

In my parents’ yearbooks, every guy had to put greasy Brylcreem in their hair. That’s not only yucky, but it was a waste of money and time! Please stop the Mr. Clean look! That’s a lose-lose-lose! Larkin Novak

Bronx: My cat Rocky Shamrock has made the semifinals in the America’s Favorite Pet competition! The contest began with more than 50,000 cats. There are only 16 left! It would be nice if this got a little exposure. Help him win this thing! Kevin O’Brien

Jamaica: How quickly we forget! In 2019, the Academy Awards best picture was “Parasite,” best director was “Parasite,” best original screenplay was “Parasite,” best international feature film was “Parasite” — to date, the only nominee to win best film in both categories! Don’t forget that “Parasite” really opened the door, but definite congrats to “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Carol Grant

Brooklyn: The 95th Academy Awards ceremony was one of the worst-concocted shows ever. Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue was way too long and set the stage for the misery that followed. How could the Academy have omitted the passing of Chaim Topol in the “In Memoriam” segment? The mere fact that his passing was announced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu showed the significance of this person. In addition, Kimmel’s remark regarding Robert Blake was offensive at best. We know what Blake was accused of years back. Joking to the audience to vote on his being added to the “In Memoriam” segment was nasty and uncalled for. The Oscar shows of years ago had class. Ed Greenspan

Brooklyn: Right on, Leonard Greene (“Bigot busted, for now,” column, March 12). You did the right thing. Not speaking out would be classic Martin Niemöller. He publicly confessed his inaction to the fate of many Nazi victims. He wrote the following after being imprisoned by the Nazis. “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.” Marlene and John Blank

Malverne, L.I.: I can’t believe we have to spring ahead. Here we are, well into the 21st century, with the prevalence of LED lighting and other smart technology that makes this twice-a-year ritual unnecessary. Every year we move further from the Ben Franklin age of candlelight and his argument for cost savings by having more daylight in the evening. To make things worse, the U.S. is considering making daylight saving time the permanent time. This is catering to a wake-up-late, café-in-the-evening culture. Who cares about the workers who start at 5 or 8 a.m. shifts? Certainly not our politicians. Where are our representatives in Congress with virtue and sensitivity to our future as a hard-working nation? Make standard time 12 months of the year. Help make daylight saving time obsolete. Brooklyn: As a taxpayer and a voter, I’m frustrated at the way New York botched and delayed its rollout of marijuana legalization so that local small business owners are now being raided. While New York spent so much time trying to figure out how to execute the law it passed legalizing marijuana, some people exhibited the American spirit of entrepreneurship by opening weed shops. Since New York is clearly making up rules as it goes along, how about pivoting to work with these local small business owners to bring them into the fold of being legal purveyors instead of the raid-and-seizure strategy that takes up police resources, ruins local small businesses and benefits nobody? Also, it’s an absurdity to suggest that anyone would cut marijuana with fentanyl because there’s simply no profit motive for that. It’s clearly a fake scare tactic. Stop failing at dealing with this, New York. Katherine Raymond

Monroe, N.J.: Does the Daily News think it’s alright to replace Rosie the Riveter with a Black woman because the city of Newark unveiled a statue of Harriet Tubman that is white? It is not right. Shame on you. John Ray

Bel Air, Md.: As a former resident of the Bronx, employee of the Bronx Zoo and lifelong Yankees fan, I had a thought that with the possibility of patches being added to uniforms of major league ballplayers this year, it would be a tremendous opportunity for a perfect marriage (and for goodwill) for the Bronx Zoo to be prominently displayed on Yankee sleeves in 2023. On the surface it may seem silly, but consider the benefits for both organizations: For the Yankees, a wink and a nod to its reputation while also promoting the other storied organization on the other side of the borough (without seeming overtly mercenary). For the zoo, the obvious promotional value and endorsement. For me? Seeing my favorite Bronx institutions get together. If only I could get the Botanical Garden involved too (oy, I’m such a yenta!). Brooklyn: What was Democrat Jamie Raskin thinking asking those 26 House Oversight Committee Republicans to sign that anti-white supremacy letter? Did he not realize what would happen if they did? They’d have to renounce their white supremacist voting base, turn in their white robes and pointy white hoods (to match their pointy white heads) and be banned from white supremacist barbecues and lucrative fundraisers evermore! Of course, they could just resign their current party affiliation and become sane, common-sensed, science-minded Democrats! But then, they’re Republicans — which explains everything! Kevin Hanley
