The Rise of Breathwork: A Personal Journey into Mindfulness
In an era where mental health challenges are on the rise, many individuals seek alternative strategies to cope. After exploring various methods such as medication, therapy, and technology, I decided to focus on breathwork as a potential solution.
Exploring Breathwork Apps
To begin my journey, I delved into the app store, where an array of breathwork applications awaited. I downloaded several options including iBreathe, Breathpod, Breathwrk, and Breathworkk. Engaging in activities like testing my carbon dioxide tolerance and completing quizzes confirmed my feelings over my mental state. Insights gleaned from a questionnaire described my nervous system as “Highly Dysregulated.” Amid the soothing beats of electronic music, the distinction between scientific information and pseudoscience blurred. Breathwork leaders offered affirming phrases like “I am calm and relaxed” alongside aerobics-inspired phrases such as “If in doubt, breathe it out.”
A Favorite Mentor
Among the various applications, my favorite became Breathpod, which features a charismatic instructor named Stuart Sandeman. With his charming demeanor, embellished by a nose ring, he captures attention while conveying breathwork techniques. His profile on Instagram showcases his work with the England national soccer team, elevating the credibility of his practices.
Engaging in Breath Techniques
As I began my practice, I experimented with different breathing techniques. I tried “ujjayi breathing,” which involves constricting the throat and producing a sound reminiscent of a struggling breath. Engaging my diaphragm, I simulated the tension of someone clinging to a ledge, while also practicing nadi shodhana, alternating nostril breathing. To stimulate my vagus nerve, I produced loud humming noises, startling my dog in the process.
The Rhythm of Breathwork
Counting became a significant aspect of my experience. I would inhale for four seconds, hold for seven, and exhale over eight seconds. Alternatively, I followed varied patterns that included shorter holding times. With each sequence, I felt akin to a drummer in an avant-garde band, focusing intently on the rhythm of my breath.
The Essence of Breathwork
Breathwork encompasses a wide variety of techniques, ranging from ancient practices to modern methods. However, the fundamental principle remains consistent: inhale deeply and slowly through the nose. Surprisingly, each session, even just 30 seconds long, yielded noticeable improvements in my well-being. Though challenging to articulate without sounding overly sentimental, I found a significant shift in my mental state. I felt more grounded and less anxious, leading to reduced tendencies for doomscrolling and stress-induced eating.
