Safaricom Launches Kenya’s First 5G Network: “It’s Finally Here”

• The giant telecommunications company said the network would allow customers to enjoy the fastest speeds and reliable connection
• The telco headed by Peter Ndegwa, unveiled the Home 5G WiFi product targeting customers who do not have home fibre
• The 5G launch came a day after it unveiled a new service to help keep customers’ unused SIM cards active for a longer period

Giant telecommunications company Safaricom has launched Kenya’s first 5G network.

The company said the network would allow customers to enjoy the fastest speeds and reliable connection.

“SAFARICOM 5G IS HERE! Introducing Kenya’s first 5G network. Experience the fastest speeds and the most reliable connection ever, only on Safaricom 5G network,” it tweeted.

The 5G network is reportedly 10 times faster than the 4G one.

Safaricom Nokia managing director Remy Hashem said praised the network’s strength.

“5G technology is reliable and consistent. Whether you are at home, outdoors, or a mall, you will have a consistent service of the 5G,” Hashem explained.

Home 5G WiFi

On Thursday, October 27, the telco unveiled the Home 5G WiFi product targeting customers who do not have home fibre.

It would also be available for businesses with speeds of up to 100 Mbps.

The 5G router costs KSh 25,000. To set it up, one will part with KSh 5,000.

After its installation, customers can choose different packages to suit their needs. These range from KSh 3,500 for the basic package to KSh 15,000 for the extra one.

The basic package comes with 10 Mbps, while the extra offers 100 Mbps.

Safaricom daima service

The 5G launch came a day after it unveiled a new service to help keep customers’ unused SIM cards active for a longer period.

This followed the recent move by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) to switch off thousands of SIM cards in October 2022.

The company said the service, dubbed Daima, will allow subscribers to top up their lines in three packages ranging from KSh 200, KSh 500 to KSh 1,000.

Customers wishing to keep their lines for up to six months will up to KSh 200, one year will take KSh 500, and KSh 1,000 will keep it active for two years.

According to CA’s regulations, a mobile service provider should keep a SIM card active if it is used within 90 days.
