Scotland freezes as Met Office’s longest-ever yellow alert continues

Temperatures plummet below -15C in coldest night of 2022 amid warning

  • The UK has had its coldest night of the year with Scotland plummeting below -15C
  • The longest yellow weather warning ever issued by the Met Office is extended until Thursday
  • Some schools in the Highlands and Aberdeenshire are affected by freezing temperatures

People across the country continue to experience freezing temperatures as the longest yellow weather warning ever issued by the Met Office is extended until Thursday.

Snow and ice have swept across Scotland causing travel disruption and forecasters warn there is a chance that rural communities could be cut off.

According to Met Office weather stations, the coldest areas through the night were Braemar with -15.6C and Balmoral at -13.1C.

In the Highlands and Aberdeenshire several schools and nurseries were closed due to bad weather.

On the railways, engineers dealt with an overhead line fault and a signalling fault at Haymarket in Edinburgh which was believed to have been caused by icicles.

Network Rail Scotland later tweeted: “Our overhead line staff have now removed icicles from tunnels which were believed to be causing the failure. The line has now reopened.”

Braemar Mountain Rescue confirmed the team responded to two callouts for help in the freezing temperatures on Sunday night.

A spokesperson said: “One walker rescued having become exhausted in deep snow and a search for another person overdue resolved relatively quickly.”

Temperatures below zero have fallen to around -10C across the nation, prompting advisories to commuters to use caution during the morning rush on Monday.

Following a collision on the A9, two people were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Scotland’s roadways have been infested with gritty creatures. The Tay Road Bridge is still being de-iced.

BEAR Southeast reported -11.3C on the A702 and advised motorists to exercise caution.

The cold weather is expected to last the entire week, with nighttime frosts and below-freezing temperatures during the day.

Although more recent extreme cold periods have happened in December rather than later in the winter, like in 2009 and 2010, this is still a fairly big cold spell for December because typically the coldest air doesn’t build up until January.

Even though we just had some of the coldest weather in years, it will get even colder before it warms up this weekend. There may be a few locations where temperatures drop to -20C or lower on Monday night and Thursday night, which could potentially threaten the records set in 2010. This will be significant because this weather pattern was so historic.

Clear examples do more than decorate an explanation: they show how an idea behaves under recognizable conditions. In education and software documentation alike, strong illustrations begin with a defined goal, then reveal the steps, assumptions, and result without unnecessary detail. A practical test example should state the input, expected output, and boundary condition, because these elements show whether a rule works beyond the simplest case. Including a contrasting case also helps readers distinguish a valid application from a tempting but incorrect one, while concise notes explain why the outcomes differ. When examples are updated with current data and checked against the underlying rule, they remain useful across classrooms, product guides, and professional training.
