Heavy rainfall, possible flash flooding and damaging winds across parts of the Illawarra and south coast, from Nowra to Batemans Bay, are expected overnight and continuing into Sunday morning.
Currently the BoM is forecasting the conditions will ease into Sunday evening.
Before that, the region is being warned six-hourly rainfall totals between 80mm and 120mm are possible.
While winds averaging 50-70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h possible along the coastal fringe, especially around Batemans Bay, Huskisson and Ulladulla, come the morning.
An earlier severe thunderstorm warning for Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong has since been cancelled.
SES state duty commander Nicole Hogan urged people to prepare for the conditions and warned residents to not drive, walk or ride through floodwaters.
“Localised flash flooding could result in roads being closed at short notice. Please do not take the risk and find an alternate route if you need to travel,” she said.
“Landslips are also possible, and I would urge the public to remain vigilant.”
NSW SES Units in the Illawarra and South Coast region are ready to respond to calls for assistance.
The storm will also impact Queensland and Victoria, with wet weather also expected in South Australia.

At least 30mm of rainfall is forecast for Sydney on Saturday.
The Bureau of Meteorology has advised residents to stay updated with the most recent weather updates, as heavy rainfall could hit harder for some in the east.
“We are expecting moderate to heavy falls, as well as some gusty winds developing as a low-pressure system develops,” Mirium Bradbury from the Bureau of Meteorology said.
Gale-force winds were expected along the south coast on Sunday, with the Hunter and Sydney coasts also set for strong winds.
Sunday could see a minimum of 25mm of rainfall hit the south coast on Sunday.
The rain will ease by Monday before temperatures warm on Tuesday.
Southern Queensland is also expected to be impacted by the storm, with hazardous surf warnings in place along the Fraser Coast, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast.
Swimmers and surfers have been advised to stay out of the water by Surf Life Saving Queensland.
The state will also experience scattered showers on Saturday, with isolated thunderstorms expected in Queensland’s inner south.
The wet weather should clear by Sunday for most regions but Townsville will continue to experience isolated storms.
Hazardous surf may continue into Sunday.
Victoria will also face wet weather this weekend, with cloudy skies and scattered rainfall forecast for the state’s east.
Saturday will see a small amount of rain hit Victoria, with light winds up to 20km/h expected to gust through Melbourne.
The East Gippsland Coast has been issued a strong wind warning for Sunday as rainfall is expected to continue over the area.
Morning fog is also expected in the northwest and western parts of Victoria.
The rain is expected to clear by Sunday with a dry and sunny day forecast everywhere besides the far southwest – which will experience isolated scattered storms.
A high-pressure ridge will cause cold south and south-westerly winds in South Australia.
The state will also experience patchy rainfall in the northeast on Saturday, expected to clear by the late morning.
Showers will continue through the southern parts of the state.
Isolated showers will continue into Sunday, with cloudy skies and rainfall expected in the state’s south.
Cool and light winds will continue to blow through the state on Sunday.
Scattered showers are expected to continue through for the rest of the week.
Light showers are expected in some parts of Western Australia for Saturday and Sunday, while the Hedland and Burrup districts are bracing for extreme fire danger.
The South West Land Division can expect cool mornings on Saturday, with early morning frost expected through the Great Southern area.
Light showers will continue through to Sunday, with possible showers in the west Pilbara and northwest Gascoyne areas.
There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms in the far Northern Kimberley.
Showers are expected to move through the state on Monday and Tuesday.
Tasmania will have a mostly clear and sunny weekend, with some early morning showers in the west, far south and Bass Strait Islands on Saturday.
Sunday is expected to be sunny, with some patchy inland frost in the morning.
The Northern Territory can expect some light showers on Saturday morning in the eastern Simpson District.
Showers will clear by the afternoon.
Gusty and cool winds will also blow through Renner Springs and will move north towards Elliot by the afternoon.
There is a moderate fire danger warning for the Simpson, Tanami, southern Barkly and western Lasseter Districts.
Sunday will bring a small chance of showers in the Daly River Mouth and Wadeye regions.
The rest of the territory can expect clear and sunny weather.
