Artistic Tribute to Street Hawkers in Accra
The vibrant daily lives of street hawkers in Accra have inspired a compelling new exhibition aimed at showcasing their resilience, creativity, and integral role in the city’s informal economy.
Apampam Store: A Celebration of Local Trade
Titled “Apampam Store,” this exhibition was inaugurated at the Christiansborg Archaeological Heritage Project (CAHP) Centre in Osu by renowned Ghanaian artist Nicholas Tettey Wayo, widely recognized as Nico Wayo.
As his first solo exhibition at this venue, the month-long showcase features a collection of paintings that vividly illustrate the experiences of street vendors who navigate through traffic to sell an assortment of food, beverages, and other goods to both motorists and pedestrians alike.
Understanding the Title
The exhibition’s name, “Apampam Store,” translates to “shop on the head,” reflecting the unique nature of this trade. Vendors often carry their merchandise on their heads while moving between vehicles in search of potential customers.
Familiar Faces on the Streets
From refreshing sobolo and spicy kelewele to groundnuts, pawpaw, and popular snacks like FanYogo, popcorn, bofrot, meat pies, and plantain chips, these hawkers have become an iconic presence on the streets of Accra.
Rethinking the Perception of Hawkers
However, Mr. Wayo emphasizes that his work aims to transcend the common stereotype of street hawkers as mere nuisances, instead illustrating their vital contributions to the daily lives of residents.
“We call them hawkers. I call them life savers. This work archives their hustle as art. They don’t just sell in traffic. They save us in traffic,” he stated, highlighting the essential service they provide.
Experience the Exhibition
The exhibition is a unique opportunity to witness the artistry that captures the essence of Accra’s bustling street life and to appreciate the remarkable efforts of those who contribute to its vibrant culture.
