Brussels, Feb 23 (EFE) – The Council Chamber in Brussels decided Thursday to release Francesco Giorgi, the sentimental partner of Greek Social Democrat MEP Eva Kaili, accused like her of allegedly accepting bribes from Qatar and Morocco in the case of alleged corruption in the European Parliament, known as Qatargate, from prison on condition that he wears an electronic bracelet.
The Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office informed in a statement of this judicial decision, after the appearance of Giorgi today before the Council Chamber of the Court of First Instance of Brussels.
The court confirmed Giorgi’s pre-trial detention but “in the form of an electronic bracelet”.
“If he appeals this decision, he will appear before the indictment chamber of the Brussels Court of Appeal within two weeks,” said the Prosecutor’s Office, which added that it will not appeal this decision.
Giorgi, an Italian national who was an assistant at the European Parliament, is also the father of a two-year-old girl he had with Kaili and was the first to be arrested in a major raid last December 9.
In it, the police seized more than 1.5 million euros in cash in several searches and caught Kaili’s father “in fraganti” leaving a hotel with a suitcase full of money.
Kaili is imprisoned and charged with criminal organization, corruption and money laundering in the alleged bribery scheme linked to Morocco and Qatar. EFE
