Therapists provide tips to overcome storm anxiety | News

PADUCAH — Storms can remind people of past traumas when it comes to active weather. But if you have storm-related anxiety, there are ways to combat it.

Therapist Craig Keene said it can be tough for people in the area, and the trauma impacts people of all ages and from all walks of life.

But when it comes to overcoming those feelings, it’s about being prepared and making sure you have everything you need.

Christina Wilson has lived in Mayfield for over 20 years. She said she feels uneasy about the incoming storm but is preparing herself.

“Pretty nervous,” said Wilson, describing her current emotional state. “We’re going to the store now to get supplies just in case if the power goes out — flashlights, baby wipes, water, stuff like that.”

Preparation is key when it comes to calming your anxiety because it focuses on what you can control in unpredictable circumstances.

Not only that, it can be overwhelming to stay up to date with incoming weather systems.

So therapist Craig Keene with Four Rivers Behavioral Health said, trust your gut.

“Having a balance of being informed about the weather is going to be, but if you notice you’re watching it and it’s creating too much anxiety, trust your own your own body, your emotions, and if you notice that it’s creating too much, and trust yourself,” said Keene.

As for present and future weather patterns, Wilson said preparation is her first priority.

“Stay safe,” said Wilson. “Make sure everyone that you know and care about is safe and protected, don’t be out in it. Have the things that you need. And know that people will help if something happens.”

Keene also said to be mindful of your emotions. Don’t be judgmental toward your anxious thoughts but simply acknowledge them. Then, again, think about what you can control.

Other pieces of advice? Drink something hot or cold to put your body at ease or use a fidget toy.
