In 1999, Winslet told The Guardian that Cameron “has a temper like you wouldn’t believe” and added that she would only work with the famous filmmaker again “for a lot of money.”
Almost three decades later, however, Winslet broke her vow, and reunited with Cameron for Avatar: The Way of Water, joining the cast of the highly-anticipated Avatar (2009) sequel as Ronal, an oceanic Na’vi warrior.
“I think we’re just older, wiser, different people,” Winslet told Yahoo UK of why she decided to work with Cameron again after previously swearing not to.
“Creatively, hopefully, I’ve gone away and learned a lot of things and he has, for sure, evolved enormously as a director and as a person.”
“What’s lovely is that, when he isn’t right, now he will say, ‘Yeah, that was kind of a mistake. That was never really gonna work, but I just wanted to try it to see and yes I was wrong,'” she continued.
“So it’s really kind of reassuring to know that he is able to say, ‘I could’ve had a better idea for that thing.’ Any of us are like that, so I really appreciated that about Jim. It was fantastic.”
It’s been reported that Winslet is taking home $US6 million (approx. $8.8 million) for her role in the sequel, so maybe she didn’t break her vow after all.
