Creative Studio Happenstance Launched by Industry Leaders
Agency executives Toby Talbot and Lucinda Sherborne have officially unveiled Happenstance, a new creative studio designed to counter the belief that brands often leave outcomes to chance.
Talbot remarked, “Brands are contributing more content to the market than ever, yet insufficient attention is paid to the consequences of that content. This approach resembles a ‘cross-your-fingers-and-hope-for-it’ mentality. We believe brands deserve a better probability of success.”
The launch of Happenstance coincides with a trend within marketing teams to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into their strategies, workflows, and production processes.
“AI facilitates quicker and more abundant output,” Talbot added. “However, this results in increased automation and fragmentation, leading to fewer impactful ideas that truly engage the audience. Simply having presence does not equate to making an impact.”
Foundations of ‘Made Luck’
According to Sherborne, Happenstance integrates senior strategy, creativity, and orchestration to foster conditions that facilitate significant brand developments.
“Creating ‘made luck’ relies on evidence rather than mere instinct. We bridge the gap between business insights and consumer behaviors, along with the overarching brand and cultural context, to unearth revelations that provide brands with a compelling entry point,” she explained.
“The pivotal question is: What needs to shift in consumer perception, and what idea can catalyze that change? We engage with the appropriate partners early in the process to ensure that these ideas extend beyond paid campaigns,” Sherborne added.
A Collaborative and Adaptive Approach
Talbot and Sherborne bring a wealth of experience from previous roles at Colenso BBDO, Saatchi & Saatchi, and DDB. They maintain a hands-on presence in all projects undertaken by Happenstance.
The studio offers flexibility, allowing it to either lead projects independently, collaborate with existing agencies, or integrate into established teams. This approach combines the expertise of senior specialists tailored to each project’s needs while preserving existing industry relationships.
“We collaboratively design ideas that resonate with how people genuinely live, ensuring they transcend the confines of a paid media strategy. Our aim is to collaborate with media partners, not circumvent them,” stated Sherborne.
Talbot added, “Our goal is not to create another large-scale agency. Instead, we are focused on leveraging judgement, taste, and timing where they can significantly impact. This is our formula for creating luck.”
The launch of Happenstance signifies a new chapter in marketing, emphasizing strategic creativity in an era increasingly influenced by technology.
