Trump Describes Iran Conflict as a “Soft War” on Eve of Midterm Elections
In a bid to reassure voters before the midterm elections, President Donald Trump characterized the ongoing situation with Iran as a “soft war” that the United States can conclude at any moment. Speaking on “Hannity,” Trump emphasized, “We’re not fighting a war… When was the last time we fired anything? This isn’t a war; this is a very soft war.”
As Americans head to the polls, the Iran issue is becoming a significant factor, especially amidst rising gas prices and economic repercussions from a conflict that began eight months ago.
Iran’s Role in the Upcoming Election
Voter sentiment around the Iran situation has grown increasingly critical. GOP lawmakers are expressing concern that the administration’s handling of the conflict may impact Republican fortunes at the ballot box.
Trump reinforced his stance, stating, “What’s a war? A war is fighting. Take a look at World War I, World War II. When was the last time you saw us fighting with them? We go months and months; we talk.”
Recent U.S. Actions Against Iran
These remarks come on the heels of a recent U.S. airstrike targeting Iran’s Qeshm Island in response to Iranian aggression towards a U.S. aircraft. Officials clarified to Fox News that this “defensive” action does not signify a return to widespread military engagement with Iran.
Despite this, Trump appeared reluctant to escalate military operations, warning that Iran would face “the hammer” if ongoing peace talks fail. He downplayed the intensity of current hostilities, claiming, “This isn’t much of a war…because there hasn’t been shooting for months.”
Concerns Over Potential Military Escalation
Trump conveyed that he is not rushing into military strikes, although he asserted that the U.S. retains the capability to act swiftly if necessary. “With [Operation] Midnight Hammer, we bombed out all of their potential nuclear power,” Trump noted. He suggested further action might be required but maintains that negotiating a deal remains a priority.
The Political Ramifications of the Iran Conflict
The financial implications of the conflict have emerged as a potential vulnerability for Republicans, with Pentagon estimates indicating it has cost taxpayers over $47 billion. In response to criticisms surrounding this expense, Trump referred to it as “peanuts,” framing military involvement as crucial to disarming Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Trump Claims Iranian Military Capability is Diminished
In his assessment, Trump stated that Iran’s military forces have been significantly weakened, claiming, “Their military is gone, their navy is gone, their air force is gone.” He elaborated that despite having some missile capabilities, Iran lacks the resources to rebuild its military infrastructure.
Concluding his statements, Trump asserted that the U.S. stands strong and capable of resolving the conflict at any moment, positioning the administration’s approach as one of enduring strength.
