In the modern NBA, the only bad contracts are max contracts.
Anything else can be moved – if you’re willing to sweeten the deal, of course. A couple of bad contracts and a whole lot of draft capital can land you a star player.
That’s why overpaid players aren’t necessarily a problem these days. They’re salary matchers.
With the trade market’s new emphasis on draft capital, those types of deals can be useful.
The Dallas Mavericks have plenty of them. Players like Davis Bertans and Tim Hardaway Jr. may make more than they’re worth, but that doesn’t mean they can’t help the Mavericks improve their roster.
Could they be packaged for Pascal Siakam of the Toronto Raptors this summer?
