Ensemble superhero films is a mixture of fun, drama and chaos – in a good way. It’s what makes the audience come back to the theatres time and time again to transport you into a realm where you can escape. But not only this, the characters bring out more to their buff exterior and their vulnerability is exposed which makes us see that superheroes are people after all.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods follows Billy (Zachary Levi/Asher Angel), Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) and their foster family as they fight a trio of sorceresses called the Daughters of Atlas. They are led by Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu), who want to avenge their father, Atlas.
The fusion of action and comedy is amazing, and the cinematography is incredible to showcase the magnitude of the fights between good and evil. New characters like Hespera and Kalypso forego the traditional ‘damsel in distress’ idea and instead shows that now women have the upper hand in these superhero films. The theme of siblings is interesting though and is juxtaposed by Billy and his family with Hespera and her sisters. The lengths they are willing to go so that their own family are safe are reflected by their motivation and to some certain extent, their actions
All in all, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a great escape with the family and definitely keeps you on your toes from start to finish!
