Glenn Maxwell Announces Retirement from International Cricket
Glenn Maxwell, the renowned Australian short-form cricket player, has officially announced his retirement from international cricket.
The 38-year-old made the decision to step away from Australia’s Twenty20 team as well as his state side, having previously retired from one-day internationals in 2025.
During an interview on The Final Word, Maxwell expressed his emotions when informing his teammates about his departure from state cricket: “Post the last one-day game for Victoria, speaking to my teammates and letting them know that was gonna be my last game for the state was probably harder than I thought it was going to be; got a little choked up,” he said.
This year, Maxwell represented Australia at the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Throughout his impressive career, he played 130 T20 internationals, accumulating a total of 2,897 runs with an average of 28.97 and an astonishing strike rate of 154.42.
In addition to his batting prowess, Maxwell took 51 wickets and completed 62 catches, notably achieving a career-high score of 145 not out against Sri Lanka in 2016.
Reflecting on his journey, Maxwell stated, “I’m grateful for the time I was able to play for my country. If you had offered me that career when I first walked into the Vic change rooms in 2009-ish, I would have bitten your hand off.”
He continued, emphasizing the importance of inspiring young players: “I’m extremely grateful to have played that much for my country and to hopefully inspire some kids who want to take the game up, to want to play differently and to be open and vulnerable and to not shy away and be themselves.”
Maxwell also reminisced about receiving his first Test cap, noting, “It was pretty incredible when even getting my first Test cap, well and truly before I was probably ready. It was pretty exciting, and I’m glad they took a gamble on me, and I’m glad I could, at different stages, repay the faith and be afforded the chance to play as much, for as far, as I did.”
In addition to his T20 achievements, Maxwell played seven Tests for Australia and 149 ODIs, contributing significantly to his state team, Victoria, in both First Class and List A formats.
While he moves away from international cricket, Maxwell will continue participating in Twenty20 franchise leagues, including the upcoming Big Bash League with the Melbourne Stars.
