Liberty Parts Ways with Chris DeMarco, Initiates Search for New Head Coach for the Third Time in Three Years

Coaching Change for the New York Liberty

The New York Liberty are embarking on an offseason marked by a coaching transition, signaling the pursuit of their third head coach in as many years.

DeMarco’s Departure

On Tuesday, the franchise announced the termination of Chris DeMarco, who had led the team for one season. Under his leadership, the Liberty secured the Commissioner’s Cup championship, achieved a regular season record of 26-18, and managed to claim the No. 8 seed in the playoffs, stunningly sweeping the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx in the first round.

Official Statement

The team confirmed DeMarco’s departure through social media, expressing their gratitude with a farewell message alongside his image: “Thank you, Coach DeMarco.”

Future Considerations

Despite the coaching change, DeMarco was under contract for the upcoming 2027 season, as were key players within the roster including Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, and Jonquel Jones.

Reflections Post-Season

Following their semifinal loss to Atlanta, DeMarco had expressed optimism about returning for another season. However, Ionescu commented on her uncertainty regarding future developments, stating, “I don’t know what’s going to happen. Regardless, I’m thankful for him coaching us this year and giving us a chance, and we just fell short.”

A Shift in Leadership

DeMarco, who previously served as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors, stepped into his first role in the WNBA by succeeding Sandy Brondello. Brondello had guided the Liberty to a 27-17 record in 2025 and brought home the WNBA title in 2024 while finishing as a runner-up in the previous season.

General Manager’s Challenge

Jonathan Kolb, the team’s general manager, is now tasked with hiring his fourth head coach since taking on this role in 2019.
