Hoyas Dominate in Season Opener
In an impressive display of skill, Jaland Lowe made an explosive debut for the Georgetown Hoyas, scoring 23 points as they secured an 80-58 victory over Loyola (Md.) during their season opener in Washington on Monday.
Consistent Performance
Adding to the Hoyas’ efforts, Vincent Iwuchukwu contributed significantly with 21 points and nine rebounds. This win marks the fifth consecutive year that Georgetown has started its season with a victory.
New Faces Making an Impact
Former Kansas player Elmarko Jackson also made his mark, scoring 14 points in the match.
Loyola Struggles Continue
Loyola (0-1) faced another tough start to their season, experiencing their 13th consecutive opening-game loss. Leo Ricketts was the standout for the Greyhounds, scoring all 10 of his points in the second half.
Lowe’s Strong Start
After a challenging season at Kentucky plagued by injuries, Lowe quickly found his rhythm, sinking 5 of 8 attempts from beyond the arc. He opened the scoring with a driving layup that ignited a 14-2 surge for the Hoyas within the first five minutes.
Greyhounds Fight Back
Loyola managed to stay competitive by capitalizing on second-chance points, scoring 11 such points in the first half. Sebastien Emenalo’s three-pointer briefly narrowed the margin to 25-15, but Georgetown retaliated with a 14-0 run to increase their lead to 39-15.
End of First Half Dominance
During this critical stretch, Iwuchukwu showcased his power with a slam dunk and followed it up with a layup. Lowe, alongside freshman Pedro Pastre, added crucial three-pointers, closing the first half with a triple from Lowe to lead 44-20.
Second Half Surge from Loyola
The Greyhounds’ most productive segment occurred early in the second half, making eight straight shots, including five three-pointers. Ricketts kickstarted the run with back-to-back threes, ultimately contributing to a 14-point streak that brought the score to 50-39.
Georgetown Regains Control
Following a brief scare, Lowe calmed the Hoyas’ momentum with two layups and a jumper, maintaining their lead. Georgetown then executed a decisive 16-point run, fueled by Jackson’s early baskets and a stellar performance from Iwuchukwu, which extended their advantage to 72-45.
