URC Concludes Fifth Round; A Month-long Break Ahead
The United Rugby Championship (URC) wrapped up its fifth round of matches this past weekend, with teams now entering a month-long hiatus as the Nations Championship takes center stage.
This article reviews the current standings of the Stormers, Lions, Sharks, and Bulls within the URC.
Current URC Standings
The Glasgow Warriors are at the top of the URC standings, amassing 23 points from five matches played.
The Bulls follow closely in second place with 21 points, having recorded only one loss so far. They delivered a commanding performance against the Scarlets, winning 54-26 at Loftus Versfeld on October 31.
In third place, the Stormers are just behind their Pretoria rivals due to points difference, having thrashed Ulster 33-7 in Cape Town on Saturday.
The Sharks currently occupy the fourth spot, edging out Edinburgh in fifth place based on points. They secured a narrow 15-3 victory over Munster in Ireland this past weekend.
Leinster, Cardiff, and the Dragons complete the top eight positions in the league.
Meanwhile, the Lions sit at 13th as they cope with a challenging season marked by the emotional loss of player Hyron Andrews during their tour. They suffered a 29-20 defeat against the Warriors in Glasgow.
International Competitions Pause Domestic Action
The URC has put a temporary stop to its matches as the Nations Championship enters its final rounds.
The Springboks are scheduled to face Italy in Turin on November 7, according to the tournament’s official schedule. Following that, South Africa will take on France in Paris on November 13, and Ireland in Dublin on November 21.
The finals weekend for the Nations Championship will occur in London from November 27 to 29. Currently, the Springboks lead the Southern Hemisphere standings, with New Zealand close behind on points difference.
Coach Rassie Erasmus is anticipated to announce his squad for the upcoming match against Italy later this week.
Looking Ahead: Resumption of Domestic Rugby
The domestic rugby season is set to resume with the sixth round of matches, scheduled between December 4 and 6.
South Africa’s teams will engage in derby matches, with the Lions hosting the Bulls at Ellis Park and the Sharks welcoming the Stormers to Kings Park.
Following this round, there will be another pause in the URC as the Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup take over the schedule.
The second rounds of these tournaments will take place from December 11 to 13, as per the tournament schedules. Notably, the Lions are set to host Stade Toulousain at Ellis Park on December 12, while the Bulls travel to Montpellier. On December 13, the Stormers will face Union Bordeaux Bègles at Stade Chaban-Delmas, and the Sharks will entertain Scarlets at Kings Park.
The Cheetahs, although not competing in the URC, will battle the Dragons in Swansea on December 13.
