Geelong Cats Poised for AFLW Qualifying Final Showdown
Co-captain Nina Morrison has consistently believed that the Geelong Cats possess the talent required to become a leading team in the AFLW. Her confidence has been bolstered by teammate Georgie Prespakis, whose remarkable performances have helped erase the label of underachievement for the club and elevate them to new heights.
Under the guidance of former Melbourne coach Mick Stinear, the Cats have enjoyed a stellar season and are set to face the Demons in the qualifying final this Saturday at Princes Park.
With a record of 11 wins and 1 loss, Geelong has not only become the highest-scoring team in AFLW regular season history but also secured second place on the ladder, trailing North Melbourne only by percentage.
“We’ve been disappointed over the last couple of seasons regarding our performance,” Morrison expressed. “I have always seen the potential in this group and the caliber of our list, believing we could perform better.” She continued, “In that sense, our success hasn’t felt surprising. We’ve just managed to unlock certain elements that were already present, bringing them out collectively at the right time.”
Prespakis, an explosive midfielder and runner-up for the 2025 AFLW best and fairest, has taken her game to new heights this season. The 23-year-old has averaged 30.6 disposals, 8.1 clearances, and eight score involvements per match.
“Her off-field dedication has played a significant role in getting her into the right mindset for game performance,” Morrison noted. “She is undeniably a star, and I find myself in awe of her on-field feats. This season, she has not only exhibited her skill but has also improved her ability to elevate her teammates’ play, showcasing her personal growth.”
This Saturday marks Stinear’s first opportunity to lead the Cats against Melbourne.
Morrison, who will reach the milestone of 75 games, is keen to face Melbourne’s formidable midfield group, which includes stars like Kate Hore, Tyla Hanks, and Olivia Purcell. “We haven’t faced them yet this season, so I’m looking forward to the challenge of matching up against some of the best midfielders in the competition,” she stated. “While Mick knows their strengths, our focus remains on our own game and executing that effectively.”
Additionally, Morrison emphasized that the move to Princes Park, rather than their home ground at Kardinia Park—booked for a dirt bike event—would not be a concern for the players.
