Gold Coast Suns Secure Final Victory but Miss out on Finals Opportunity
The Gold Coast Suns clinched a win in their last match of the home-and-away season, yet they departed the field defeated in spirit after falling short of securing a double chance for the finals.
In a bid to supplant Carlton from fourth place following the latter’s victory over Brisbane, the Suns aimed for a decisive win to significantly boost their percentage. Unfortunately, their 9.8 (62) to 7.11 (53) triumph at Henson Park left them trailing Carlton by a mere 0.2 percentage points.
Giants Honor Retiring Players
For the Greater Western Sydney Giants, the match held sentimental value as they honored the retiring Alicia Eva and Isabel Huntington in their final game. The Giants displayed commendable grit, rallying before a home crowd to commemorate their achievements.
Alicia Eva, an inaugural AFLW player with Collingwood a decade ago, served as the Giants’ captain for five years. Isabel Huntington, the number one draft pick and an All-Australian, faced significant challenges throughout her six-year career due to three separate ACL injuries.
Match Dynamics: First Half Dominance Followed by GWS Resurgence
The Suns appeared poised for an easy victory, dominating the first half with strong performances in stoppages and midfield play. They led the clearances 16-10, thanks to the efforts of Charlie Rowbottom and Lucy Single, both contributing five each.
However, the Giants made a comeback in the third quarter, outpacing the Suns with 68 disposals to 46. They converted eight out of ten entries into scoring opportunities, keeping the Suns scoreless and gaining an 11-point lead going into the last term.
Rowbottom’s Late Rally
In a determined effort during the final quarter, Rowbottom was instrumental in narrowing the gap, scoring a goal in the dying minutes that briefly put the Suns back in the lead. She concluded the match with 33 disposals, two goals, and twelve clearances, yet the victory was bittersweet, as the Suns finished with nine wins this season.
“While we’re pleased to secure the four points, I really wanted to finish fourth,” Rowbottom stated post-match. “We’ll have to take the long route home.”
Essendon Bids Farewell to Coach with Victory
In another match of note, Essendon triumphed over Collingwood with a score of 4.14 (38) to 4.7 (31), marking a fitting farewell for outgoing Bombers coach Natalie Wood and a final setback for Pies manager Sam Wright.
