Hamadi Al Ghaddioui’s own goal in the 87th minute and Nils Petersen’s effort in stoppage time secured Freiburg a 2-0 win against second-division side Sandhausen and a spot in the quarter-finals of the German Cup.
Freiburg had most of the ball possession, but managed to create only a few goal chances as Sandhausen were defensively solid.
Freiburg defender Matthias Ginter narrowly missed the goal in the 55th minute, while an unmarked Michael Gregortisch also headed the ball a bit too wide in the 62nd.
But when the game was set to go into extra-time, Al Ghaddioui mistakenly deflected the ball into his own net after a corner, and Nils Petersen ended Sandhausen’s hopes of reaching the next round by sinking the ball into the net in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
