The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has too much authority over the citizens. The Board of Supervisors represents more than 10 million people, which is all of Los Angeles County. They represent more people than the Mayor of Los Angeles, who represents the city of LA.
RedState’s Jennifer Oliver O’Connell interviewed three outsiders last month. They were running against three insiders for Board of Supervisors District three. Straight from the jump, the outsiders, Roxanne Beckford Hoge. Craig Brill, and Jeffi Girgenti were never given a fair chance of winning the race. They were given minimal attention by the local media, newspapers, and other outlets, while the local media propped up State Senator Bob Hertzberger, West Hollywood City Council member Lindsey Horvath, and State Senator Henry Stern, as Hertzberger and Horvath advanced to the General Election.
Four of the five members of the Board of Supervisors always vote together; they vote the same way, no matter what. Those four members are Hilda Solis (District One), Holly Mitchell (District Two), Sheila Kuehl (District Three; Retiring), and Janice Hahn (District Four). The only member who does not always vote the same way as the rest of the members is common sense, moderate Republican Kathryn Barger (District Five).
In 2017, the Board of Supervisors appointed “Doctor” Barbara Ferrer as the new Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Now-indicted Board Chair Mark Ridley-Thomas said:
“Dr. Ferrer is uniquely qualified to lead and serve Los Angeles County’s diverse populations, and has a gift for engaging youth and families … I look forward to the energy and creativity that she will bring to protecting the health of our communities during this time of uncertainty in federal healthcare policy.”
The Supervisors appointed Barbara Ferrer; they did not put it up for a vote for the citizens of Los Angeles to vote on who the next Department of Public Health Director should be.

A few weeks ago, we reported that four members of the Board of Supervisors voted on a ballot measure to oust elected Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva from office. The only person who did not vote for the measure was Kathryn Barger. The Supervisors and Sheriff have been feuding for some time, and although all five members endorsed Villanueva’s opponent, Robert Luna, Barger did not think it was the right thing to do, especially with him being up for re-election in November. Villanueva finished in first place during the June primary.
According to KABC-TV, in 2020, the Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to put a charter amendment on the ballot. The amendment was whether a minimum of 10 percent of Los Angeles County’s unrestricted general funds be set aside annually for housing, mental health, jail diversion, and other social services, as well as alternatives to incarceration. The one member who voted no was Kathryn Barger.
In conclusion, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors decided for the citizens whether to mandate masks and vaccines because they decided who to appoint as Public Health Director. Not only did the Board of Supervisors not give the citizens a voice to decide whether Ferrer was right for the job or not; now, they want citizens to vote on a measure that would give the Supervisors the power to pick the County Sheriff while ousting an elected Sheriff in Villanueva.
As we have reported in the past, Mayor Eric Garcetti and Governor Gavin Newsom broke their own “rule” by dining with more than 10 people, maskless, while Californians were under lockdown and showing up to the NFC Championship game, maskless, while there was a mask mandate at SoFi Stadium. “Rules for thee, but not for me,” as Newsom, Garcetti, and members of the Board of Supervisors don’t even try to hide their hypocrisy anymore. Just this week, Ferrer did, as well.

So much for Democracy, right? We the people should be able to decide who our Sheriff is going to be. We the people should decide who should be the Director of our County’s Public Health Department. Not five people deciding for 10 million citizens. The citizens should have a voice; they should be able to decide what is best for Los Angeles.
As you can see, the Board of Supervisors in Los Angeles has too much authority, as is; if they get their way and oust Villanueva, while choosing for us who our Sheriff will be, LA County will be doomed. So, voters should pay attention to these issues; otherwise, the County will be fully controlled by the Supervisors.
