Tragic Plane Crash in South Florida Kills All Nine Onboard
A devastating incident occurred in South Florida on Sunday when a private jet, carrying nine individuals, nosedived into a neighborhood. The Learjet 60 crashed shortly after 12:50 p.m. in Palm Beach County, resulting in a massive fireball that narrowly missed nearby homes and fell close to a busy roadway.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all passengers onboard lost their lives, describing the event as a “horrific tragedy.” He made this announcement via a post on X.
Investigation Underway
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is deploying a team to collaborate with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. According to the FAA, the aircraft had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, en route to the Bahamas.
Details about the victims have not been released as authorities work to determine the identities of those onboard. Jim Reynolds, a spokesperson for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, stated that it was a private flight but could not provide further information about the passengers.
Scene of the Crash
Witness accounts describe the terrifying moment the plane plunged from the sky. Video footage captured from vehicles showed the aircraft descending rapidly before striking the ground and erupting into flames. Eyewitnesses expressed shock at how close the jet landed to homes and vehicles, with flames reaching debris scattered around a crater formed by the impact.
The crash site was enveloped in thick black smoke, and the local community is still assessing the potential damage to residential properties. The incident occurred near the intersection of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, prompting the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to close off surrounding roads and advise drivers to avoid the area.
Emergency Response
Firefighters and emergency personnel quickly arrived at the scene to contain the fire and conduct initial assessments. A nearby worker reported that power outages affected the vicinity for about two hours following the incident.
The investigation into the causes of the crash is ongoing as authorities continue their work at the site.
This tragic event underscores the inherent risks associated with aviation and the impact of such accidents on communities.
