Brentford sign winger, Mikkel Damsgaard from Sampdoria for an undisclosed fee.
Damsgaard began his career at FC Nordsjaelland where he graduated through their youth system and went on to score 13 goals in 95 appearances, prior to joining Sampdoria in July 2020 where he scored twice and provided four assists in 49 appearances.
The 22 year-old winger has signed a five-year contract until June 2027, with the transfer fee agreed between Brentford and Sampdoria reported to be around £12.6 million.
Brentford manager, Thomas Frank described Damsgaard as a “classic Brentford signing” due to being a young player, who has huge potential to develop into a key player with the support of Brentford’s coaching staff.
Frank proceeded to describe Damsgaard’s injury crisis at Sampdoria last season as “unlucky” but believes that he “is an extremely skillful player, who can run with the ball and move it well.”
Damsgaard also is popular for his attacking ability as Frank added: “He is aware of the space around him and plays on the half turn. He also wants to play forward and can do so by either passing or dribbling.
“Mikkel is capable of creating and scoring goals and he has the ability to run with the ball past players. That is a great asset to have in the squad.
“He will create chances for us and is fantastic at getting out of tight areas with the ball, we will benefit from that.”
On how Damsgaard will fit into his playing style at Brentford this season, Frank commented: “We think Mikkel can play as one of our ‘eights’ in a 4-3-3 system or as a ‘ten’. He can also play on the wing.
“We will use him in the way we think we can get the best out of his offensive abilities. Importantly, he is a player that will fit into our dressing room. He is a great character, he wants to work hard, he wants to work for the team, and he wants to develop.”
Damsgaard represents Denmark internationally and has scored four goals in 16 appearances since he made his international debut in a 2-0 win against Sweden in November 2020, with his most iconic goal to date coming in the Danes’ semi-final defeat against England at Euro 2020.
Damsgaard could make his debut for Thomas Frank’s Bees at home to Manchester United on Saturday 13 August, live on Sky Sports in a 5:30pm BST kick-off.
