Notre Dame’s Playoff Hopes Hang in the Balance Ahead of Crucial Matchup
The initial round of rankings released by the College Football Playoff Committee has sparked considerable discussion regarding Notre Dame’s playoff prospects, particularly following their significant seven-place drop from the latest AP Poll. Analysts unanimously agree: a loss to Miami this weekend could effectively end the Irish’s playoff ambitions.
While some may hastily declare Notre Dame’s fate sealed, it is premature to label Saturday’s game as a must-win scenario. A victory would neutralize much of the current debate, especially considering Notre Dame is favored by seven points. With two of their remaining three games set to be played at home in South Bend and only a single road contest at Syracuse, the likelihood of further losses appears minimal.
More importantly, a win against Miami could still keep Notre Dame in the playoff conversation. Their current ranking might be inflated, as they sit above several two-loss teams from the Big Ten and SEC that possess commendable ranked victories. Furthermore, a loss against a top-ranked team will not necessarily result in a dramatic fall in the rankings.
Currently, Alabama occupies the fifth spot in the CFP rankings but has shown inconsistency beyond a marquee early-season victory against Kentucky, a team that may finish with four losses. Reports from ESPN attribute Alabama’s position to their notable victory over Mississippi State, a team that has struggled both with and without standout player Kamario Taylor.
On the metrics front, Notre Dame maintains a favorable position despite lacking impressive wins. They rank 11th in Strength of Record (SOR), 1st in Football Power Index (FPI), and 6th in Game Control. With their current -7 point spread against the nation’s leading team, the Irish can still regain footing in the playoff race, particularly by securing a victory against a competitive SMU squad subsequently.
This season, the Big Ten and SEC’s fierce competition has been relentless and does not appear to abate as the season progresses. Unless the committee takes unexpected action, such as drastically dropping Notre Dame from the top 20 following a loss, their chances of remaining in the playoff discussion are promising. If they can finish within the top 12, they will still qualify for the playoffs due to the committee’s established rules. Additionally, after their exclusion from last year’s playoff, there may be a push from influential stakeholders to include one of the largest television markets in this year’s postseason.
