Thailand Bans Controversial Textbook on National Security Grounds
Bangkok – The Thai government has prohibited the distribution of a textbook concerning national security, a decision attributed to its content relating to the monarchy. The book’s editor, now living in exile, made this announcement on Thursday.
In Thailand, the royal family is held in high esteem, and a stringent defamation law is in place to protect it from any criticism. Opponents of this law argue that it is often utilized to suppress dissenting voices.
The controversial publication, titled the “Routledge Handbook of Contemporary Thailand,” is a second edition that was released in English in August. It was edited by Pavin Chachavalpongpun, a well-known academic and outspoken critic of the monarchy who is currently residing in Japan.
