DeSantis Denies 2028 Presidential Campaign Reports
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis publicly challenged a recent report from The Washington Post that suggested he is making preparations for a potential 2028 presidential campaign. On Friday, DeSantis took to social media to assert that the claims were unfounded.
“The Washington Post is fabricating this out of whole cloth,” DeSantis stated on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. He emphasized, “I have not reached out to anybody about running for anything.”
He continued to criticize the newspaper’s integrity, calling the report “just another pathetic attempt to garner clicks” and noting that it relied on unnamed sources.
Speculations and Political Context
The Post had reported, based on insights from three unnamed individuals, that DeSantis is allegedly considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028. These sources indicated that he had begun initial discussions with at least one political consultant regarding the prospective campaign.
Additionally, the newspaper referenced a fundraising message sent out by a federal super PAC linked to DeSantis, further fueling the speculation about his political ambitions.
In follow-up interactions with users on social media, DeSantis maintained his stance. When one user expressed enthusiasm for the possibility of him running, the governor responded, “Sorry to disappoint,” while also addressing another comment suggesting that consultants could be exploiting his name for publicity. He remarked, “Probably the case. But maybe just made up by WaPo.”
Republican Performance Amid Political Challenges
These discussions about DeSantis’ future arise just days after disappointing midterm election results for the Republican Party. In this climate, the GOP faced significant losses, relinquishing control of both chambers of Congress and various entrenched Republican areas.
Despite the broader setbacks, Florida emerged as a contrasting success story, highlighted by Republican Byron Donalds’ victory in the governor’s race.
DeSantis characterized the national situation as “close to an extinction-level event for Republicans,” noting that within the ten most populous states, Florida remains the only one under Republican governance.
Previous Campaign and Future Possibilities
DeSantis previously sought the Republican presidential nomination for the 2024 election but paused his campaign in January 2024 following the Iowa caucuses and subsequently endorsed former President Donald Trump. As his current term nears its end in January, he has left the door open for another potential presidential run.
Fox News Digital has reached out for comments to both DeSantis’ office and The Washington Post regarding this matter.
