Transport for Wales Granted Approval for New Cross-Border Rail Services to Bristol
Transport for Wales (TfW) has received regulatory approval to initiate new train services connecting Cardiff with Bristol Temple Meads, enhancing cross-border rail options.
The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has sanctioned TfW’s plans for a service operating every two hours between west Wales and Bristol, starting later this year.
While Great Western Railway (GWR), which currently operates services between South Wales and Bristol, expressed concerns about potential revenue impacts, this service comes at a pivotal time as it transitions to state ownership.
TfW aims to operate trains from Cardiff Central to Bristol Temple Meads, making stops at key locations such as Newport, Severn Tunnel Junction, Filton Abbey Wood, and Stapleton Road.
Additionally, some journeys will begin or extend to towns such as Fishguard and Milford Haven, with potential stops at Bridgend, Port Talbot Parkway, Neath, Swansea, and Carmarthen.
TfW will announce the exact launch date in December and the list of stations served in the upcoming weeks.
The new service will typically run every two hours, providing nine trains in each direction on weekdays and Saturdays, and five on Sundays.
This initiative will integrate the new Cardiff to Bristol routes with existing west Wales services at Cardiff Central, creating seamless transition opportunities for passengers.
TfW already facilitates cross-border travel on its Wales and Borders network, which includes services to Manchester.
Bolstering connectivity between South Wales and Bristol is expected to attract commuters and assist in reducing vehicular traffic on the M4 corridor.
The ORR has granted TfW access rights for an initial period of 12 months, with hopes for a permanent agreement following successful operations.
A representative from TfW expressed optimism regarding the ORR’s decision, emphasizing the anticipated benefits of the new service in enhancing capacity and direct travel options for West Wales communities.
Further developments include plans for a west Wales to London train service, set to launch next year. Lumo, an operator owned by FirstGroup, is scheduled to start a daily line from Carmarthen to London Paddington in December 2027.
After securing approval from the ORR in 2022, Grand Union Trains transferred its rights to FirstGroup in 2024, paving the way for five return services daily, stopping at multiple locations including Cardiff, Newport, and London Paddington.
