NBA Insider Questions Lakers’ Title Contention Depth
According to NBA analyst Brian Windhorst, the Los Angeles Lakers still lack the necessary depth to contend for the NBA championship.
The Lakers, energized by Luka Doncic’s influence, have emerged as one of the most captivating teams in the league. However, concerns about their defensive depth linger.
This season, the team has undergone significant changes following the departure of LeBron James, along with the acquisition of new talent such as Walker Kessler.
During an interview with ESPN LA, Windhorst emphasized that the Lakers should look to replicate the successful composition of their 2020 championship squad, noting that they are still lacking in key areas.
He highlighted the critical defensive contributions of players from that championship team, many of whom have since moved on or departed, stressing the need for similar talent.
“Look back at their championship season. They achieved exceptional scoring balance with LeBron and Anthony Davis,” he stated. “Additionally, they boasted remarkable wing defenders: Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Alex Caruso, and Danny Green. Acquiring players of that caliber is essential for their success.”
As of now, the Lakers sit second in the Western Conference with an impressive 7-2 record.
Former Lakers Stars and Their Current Teams
Kyle Kuzma: Traded as part of the deal that brought Russell Westbrook to Los Angeles, Kuzma is now playing for the Milwaukee Bucks.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope: Included in the same Westbrook trade, Caldwell-Pope has recently reunited with LeBron James on the Philadelphia 76ers.
Danny Green: Green was dispatched in a trade for Dennis Schroder and officially retired in 2023.
Alex Caruso: The Lakers’ decision not to re-sign Caruso has proven costly, as he has become a pivotal player for the Oklahoma City Thunder, winning a title in the 2024-25 season.
