Russian Missile Strikes Impact Kyiv’s Energy Infrastructure
In a series of overnight attacks, Russian forces targeted energy infrastructure around Ukraine’s capital, significantly straining the city’s power supply and heating systems as temperatures approached freezing, according to officials on Saturday.
Explosions were reported throughout the city as multiple waves of ballistic missiles were launched, a number of which struck the Northern Bridge spanning the Dnipro River, as confirmed by Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Further assaults on energy facilities outside Kyiv—particularly those responsible for transmitting power from two nuclear plants—resulted in extensive damage, the Ministry of Energy reported.
Critical Damage to Resources
“The capital is facing significant challenges with electricity, water, and heat supplies,” stated President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on social media. He revealed that substations in five additional regions had also endured strikes.
Ukraine’s air force reported that 36 ballistic missiles were fired, of which only four were intercepted. Additionally, air defenses managed to down 149 out of 172 drones deployed in the assault.
Casualties Reported Amidst Attacks
The violence resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, with approximately a dozen others reported injured across various regions in Ukraine. The attacks inflicted damage on homes, businesses, and other buildings.
Moscow’s Defense Ministry characterized the strikes as a significant operation targeting Ukraine’s military-industrial sectors, alongside energy and transportation infrastructure in and around Kyiv.
Increased Air Assaults Amidst Stalled Ground Offensive
Russia has escalated its air assaults on Ukraine as its ground offensive shows signs of stagnation. The attacks predominantly focus on energy infrastructure in major urban areas using advanced missiles and drones nearly five years into its full-scale invasion.
The recent campaign has also included strikes on Kyiv’s bridges, causing significant traffic disruption in the city, home to over three million residents.
Upcoming Diplomatic Discussions
These recent strikes coincide with the approaching trilateral talks scheduled in Abu Dhabi, where Ukrainian and Russian representatives will meet, backed by U.S. diplomatic efforts that have yet to produce substantial results.
President Zelenskyy remarked, “Russia is preparing for trilateral talks while simultaneously launching ballistic missiles at our critical infrastructure,” through a post on X.
The strikes also come in the wake of the U.S. midterm elections, which have heightened expectations in Ukraine for increased support against Russia from a potentially Democratic-led Congress.
“We are counting on the U.S. Congress to pay more attention to Ukraine as Russia’s attacks continue to increase,” added Zelenskyy.
