Tragic Learjet Crash Claims Nine Lives in Florida
The father of a young co-pilot who perished in a devastating Learjet accident in Florida has shared his experience of listening to his daughter’s final radio calls. Allan Filgueiras, a fellow pilot, expressed both sorrow and pride as he recalls the moments preceding the crash that claimed the lives of nine individuals.
Desperate Search for Answers
In a poignant news conference held on Friday, Allan Filgueiras revealed that he has replayed Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras’s last communications with air traffic control multiple times since the tragic incident. He is left searching for clarity on why the aircraft plummeted from the sky on Sunday. Instead, he discovered a deep sense of admiration for his daughter’s calmness amid chaos.
“I have listened many times, trying to find a clue,” he remarked, his voice breaking with emotion. “In my mind, I just keep asking, ‘How did this happen?’ And wow, she’s tough,” he continued, visibly struggling to contain his grief.
Final Moments of the Flight
During her last communication with air traffic control, Nathalia calmly relayed critical information about ice accumulation on the plane while navigating through severe turbulence and thunderstorms. As the aircraft rapidly descended, she issued an urgent plea: “Declare an emergency 722-Bravo-Delta. We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute!”
Experts in aviation safety have noted the remarkable professionalism displayed by Nathalia as she continued to provide updates about the flight’s status, even as the reality of the situation became increasingly grim.
Family’s Heartache and Defense
Allan expressed the profound sorrow of the family, stating, “For the family — it’s like having the heart torn from my chest. I have to find a way to go on living.” The family has also stopped to address various criticisms questioning Nathalia’s qualifications to serve as co-pilot in a Learjet. With over 1,300 flight hours and having undergone extensive training, her credentials stood strong.
In the press briefing, Allan was joined by attorney Stuart Grossman, who aimed to safeguard not only her legacy but her reputation, asserting that Nathalia excelled in her training and was well-equipped for the role she held on that flight. “She was at the top of her class and fully qualified,” he affirmed, adding that there were no immediate intentions to seek legal action regarding the accident.
The Crash Investigation
The ongoing investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board has not yet revealed definitive details regarding the cause of the crash. Evidence suggests that the Learjet experienced severe accelerations outside its design limitations, with debris from the aircraft’s tail found scattered miles from the crash site.
Retired airline pilot John Cox, now the CEO of Safety Operating Systems, shared his perspective, having begun his flying career at a similar age. He emphasized Nathalia’s qualifications, stating, “To be in the right seat of a Lear 60, she had to impress somebody, because that’s a good ride. I know she loved it.”
A Grieving Father’s Reflection on Bravery
Reflecting on his daughter’s actions during the crisis, Allan conveyed a deep pride in her bravery. “She showed me what it is to be a hero,” he remarked, emphasizing that many seasoned pilots would struggle under such circumstances. “She was the one over there to the last minute fighting,” he concluded.
A Community in Mourning
The victims of the crash included various individuals, such as technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, their two young children, and their nanny, Ana María Ramírez Cetina. The plane’s captain, Jeff Gregory, aged 55, was piloting the aircraft when it tragically fell.
