Are you thinking of taking a solo trip or taking your family on vacation? Here are a few cities not to put on your itinerary! This list comprises a few of the worst cities to visit in the World, according to people who have lived or seen them.
1. Cairo, Illinois
One user noted that they drive through this town several times a month and call it a “Scooby-Doo ghost town.” Another had an account that backed this up: “An old brick building was pouring smoke out of its windows. Got closer, and it was on fire. We stopped and watched it for about half [an] hour. There was no response to put the fire out during that time.”
2. Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Someone commented, “I spent time in Afghanistan, and it was nicer than Haiti by a long shot.” Another mentioned watching a video that “showed children in Port-au-Prince eating mud because there literally wasn’t anything else to eat.” Although that video was noted to be old, it doesn’t sound like the bleak environment has changed much since.
3. Kandahar, Afghanistan
“A never-ending mass of squalor and depravity. Little boys are grabbed off the street by grown men. Sewage everywhere. All are destitute.” After reading how this city was described, I feel worse for the people who live there than anyone looking for a place to visit!
4. Luton, UK
Luton certainly doesn’t sound appealing for a visit. One contributor wrote quite a long novel about this place that ended with a ton of expletives, stating, “If I can escape Luton, you too can achieve your dreams… ‘GET OUT OF LUTON.’”
5. Amarillo, Texas
While one person got their catalytic converter stolen off their moving truck TWICE in Amarillo, another stopped at a store, only to be told to “get out of Amarillo and be safe.” I would go a step further and never go to Amarillo for my safety.
6. Stockton, California
There were several responses about avoiding Stockton, one being incredibly direct: “Bankrupt, ugly city full of tweakers and violent gang members. I don’t even like stopping there for gas.” Although this user might have been a bit crass, it sounds like a warning to stay away.
7. Calcutta, India (Now Known as Kolkata)
The top comment discussing Calcutta was more like a history lesson, with a detailed description of why this town should be avoided. They quoted Dan Simmons’ book Song of Kali, “Some places are too evil to be allowed to exist. Some cities are too wicked to be suffered. Calcutta is such a place.”
Another person followed this up: “I was there for a week for work. I’m from the States. I’ve never seen that type of poverty or filth in my life. People were relieving themselves in the packed streets and taking baths in drainage ditches. I could not wait to get home.”
8. Karachi, Pakistan
Accounts from people who visited Karachi finished with, “If you ever get a chance to visit Karachi, don’t.” One contributor stated that “Every journey I took, I either saw a car accident happen or the aftermath of a car accident.”
9. Scranton, Pennsylvania
Scranton is as boring as it seems in The Office because people have nothing but bad things to say about it. One comment described it as “an armpit” and “the swamps of sadness.” They also mentioned that their husband witnessed someone relieving themselves in the sink in a public restroom at a restaurant.
10. Baltimore, Maryland
Although there were plenty of comments regarding why this city is a terrible place to visit, one drew my attention. “[I] work in the ER. The most dangerous thing you can do in Baltimore is ‘mind your own business.’ Every patient who is stabbed or shot was simply minding their own business.”

Traditions are, like every other thing, ephemeral. The inevitability of cultural shifts is constant with the passing of time, and with these changes often come the gradual erosions of binding values that may, sadly, bring back nostalgia for the times we wish we could have again. Come with us down the recollections of the good old days we may only continue to cherish in fond memories.

Regardless, some Southerners still find the North a surprise. A recent discussion sheds some light on the matter, with people sharing their biggest surprises about their northern neighbors.
