Everyone has heard the same traveling tips over and over recently. Advice like “Watch out for pickpockets” and “Don’t carry a lot of cash!” are invaluable, but sometimes even the most savvy traveler can benefit from underrated tips and tricks. Recently, men and women met in an online discussion to reveal a handful of essential pieces of travel wisdom you can’t find in most online guides and blogs!
1. Never Follow Someone You Just Met to a New Location
When traveling overseas, safety should be at the forefront of your mind. Therefore, always exercise caution when meeting new people, and try not to let the night (or day) get away from you! “Never follow anyone to a second location,” advises one experienced traveler. “Even if it’s down the street or around the corner. It’s shocking how many people don’t think twice about following someone to an unknown location just because it seems safe. Maybe nothing will happen, but something could.”
2. Download Local Maps Ahead of Time
You’ll never know when you’ll lose cellular connectivity, so plan ahead and download offline maps of cities before you leave for your trip. Doing so will ensure you’ll never lose navigation (whether walking, driving, or using public transportation) in an unfamiliar country. Hopefully, you’ll never need them, but they act as the ultimate insurance policy.
3. Bring a Few Carabiners
Carabiners are inexpensive ways to carry more things at once without sacrificing space inside a bag. Many travelers recommend bringing multiple carabiners whenever possible. “If you’re traveling for a while, you most likely will pick up stuff along the way, and you can use the carabiners to hang shoes, umbrellas, tiny tools, and anything else,” reports one frequent adventurer.
4. Keep Your Headphones in While Walking
Countless travelers advise “walking like a local” whenever you’re out and about in an unfamiliar city. The best way to do this is to put earbuds or headphones in your ears while walking, enabling you to blend in better. The best part is that you can use your phone’s GPS turn-by-turn navigation in audio mode through your headphones, too!
5. Withdraw Money From ATMs During the Day Only
Traveling is 50% having fun and 50% making intelligent decisions! Use common sense when withdrawing money from an ATM. “Only withdraw money from an ATM inside a bank during business hours,” advises one man. “That way, if the machine eats your card, you can immediately get help from the staff. It’s especially important for long-term travel.”
6. Invest in Silicone Earplugs
Nothing can damper a trip quicker than being unable to get a good night’s sleep in a place you’ve never slept before. Hostels are notoriously noisy (and some hotels aren’t much better!), so do yourself a favor and invest in silicone earplugs. Earplugs are the most efficient way to block unwanted noise when trying to get some much-needed rest!
7. Eat Like a Local
Going on an adventure in an unfamiliar land is no excuse to eat the same food you’d enjoy at home – instead, embrace eating like a local! I promise that you won’t regret it. Eat where the locals eat; the food is usually better and much cheaper than tourist trap restaurants,” explains one woman. “If I couldn’t find those places, I’d just ask the people who worked in cafes or supermarkets for their favorite places to have lunch or dinner.”
8. Mix Up Your Trip
You know what they say: Variety is the spice of life. Whenever you’re planning a trip, make sure you mix your itinerary up. Many men and women recommend giving yourself a healthy mix of relaxation, culture, and adventure. The last thing you want is to be bored during the experience of a lifetime!
9. Master the Trucker’s Hitch
Even though I don’t think I’ve tied a knot since my days as a Cub Scout, I must admit that learning how to tie a trucker’s hitch would be invaluable while traveling! “The trucker’s hitch is a handy knot that allows you to tighten the rope as you tie it,” reveals one man. “Not only is this useful for camping, but also for setting up a taut clothesline in your room. Check out a video on YouTube, and you’ll see how easy and useful it is.”
10. Bring a Mesh Laundry Bag
I’m the master at forgetting to bring a dirty laundry bag whenever I go anywhere, and I have no choice but to mix clean clothes with dirty clothes in my backpack or suitcase. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be that way! Bring a mesh laundry bag. “It’s much better when you can easily separate dirty laundry from clean,” reveals one man. “Also, you can just drop the mesh bag off at a laundromat if you are low on time and pay to have your laundry done for you.”
11. Pack a Small First Aid Kit
You’ll never know when you will encounter a minor emergency, so play it safe by packing a small first aid kit. Items like nail scissors, bandages, and gauze are items you never think you’ll need while traveling, but you’re thankful you packed them if an unfortunate situation arises! It’s better to be safe than sorry.
12. Bring a Padlock or Two
Although most bags and backpacks have zippers, securing them with a padlock or two is the best way to protect you against pickpockets and thieves during your next adventure. “If you’re backpacking, bring an extra padlock,” explains one woman. “Many bags have holes in the zippers so you can physically lock the zippers shut. So even if someone got into your bag, there’s still another lock to get through. Personally, I have one with a key and one with a code.”
