Yesterday, the US Navy and Army launched a rocket from a base in Virginia as part of new weapons testing, the Pentagon has confirmed.
The USA test comes hours after Vladimir Putin oversaw his own weapons test which simulated a strike against Kremlin enemies.
Carried out in the Kamchatka Peninsula, a remote part of Russia’s far east, the test involved intercontinental ballistic missiles, strategic bomber planes and submarines.
The Kremlin said the drill was “a massive nuclear strike by strategic offensive forces in response to an enemy nuclear strike”.
Russia, the US, and China are all developing next-generation hypersonic weapons that can be difficult to defend against due to ultra-high speeds and the ability to change direction.
Despite the test, the Kremlin’s ambassador to the UK has said the country is not planning to use nukes against its adversaries, saying it is “out of the question”.
