Kenya Railways has raised concern over a seemingly persistent habit of unknown people pelting their trains with stones at Muhoroni area along the Kisumu-Nairobi rail line.
Evans Getembe, the officer in charge of Kisumu Railways Police Station, indicated that the incident has occurred three times.
The actions not only shatter the glass windows on the locomotives but also endanger the lives of passengers.

Strikes happen at dawn
Citizen Digital reports that the development has forced police officers in Kisumu County to launch investigations into the various incidents.

According to Gatembe, the latest incident happened on Sunday, January 1, between Koru and Kibigori, luckily no passenger was injured.
Getembe explained that railroad officials have noticed that the culprits strike at dawn as the trains pass through Muhoroni towards Kisumu.
He added that they have sought the assistance of police officers who have intensified night patrols hoping to bring the perpetrators to book.
“Police officers will not tolerate the vandalising and sabotaging of the country’s economic assets,” he warned.

The incidents come at a time Kenya Railways increased the frequency of trains ferrying passengers and goods on the Nairobi-Kisumu route as a reaction to the high traveler numbers.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen ordered that the parastatal sends more trains on the route as Kenyans travelled home in large numbers for the Christmas festivities.
“I have instructed Kenya Railways to increase the number of trains to Kisumu from December 21, 2022 to January 3, 2023 to meet the increasing demand occasioned by the festive season and ease pressure on our roads,” read part of the statement.
Murkomen was speaking during the commissioning of the Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes (RMGS) at the Naivasha Inland Container Depot accompanied by China’s Ambassador to Kenya Zhou Pingjian.
