Students use pipettes to transfer liquids during a lesson in Nehal Pfeiffer’s Biotech class at Soquel High School. Pfeiffer’s class is part of the wide-ranging and popular Career Technical Education (CTE) classes offered at various high schools through the County Office of Education. CTE, which has been offered in the California school system since the late 1960s, underwent a name change in 2017 when the title was officially changed from Regional Occupational Program to Career Technical Education. Classes are designed for college bound students as well as those who will enter the workforce directly after high school. The Santa Cruz City Schools program serves nearly half of the students in the district each year. Students in CTE programs have a higher-than-average high school graduation rate.
