The Navy’s Sea Hunter and Seahawk uncrewed surface vessels are proving concepts of operation for autonomous missions. Developed by Leidos under DARPA programs, Leidos is now using the same technology from those two platforms to create a long-duration autonomous hydrography capability to build better nautical display charts for the US Navy.
In this Game Changer article, we discuss the challenges associated with creating a fully autonomous mapping capability of the ocean floor and its features, how it will reduce cost and augment traditional mapping operations done by much larger manned vessels, and how Leidos is for the first time ever using sonar data to direct the vessel’s autonomous controls in real time.
